What to do when the cyn.in desktop client does not start

.

Problem

We're currently tracking a known issue with the cyn.in desktop client. In this issue, after the first time the cyn.in desktop client is installed, it does not start up properly again. Anomolous behaviour is observed:

  1. The main docking bar of the cyn.in desktop does not appear.
  2. The icon is shown in the windows taskbar but clicking on it does nothing.
  3. The system tray icon is shown but right click -> exit does not work.
  4. Right click - Options shows the options dialog but reset settings does not work.

We've isolated the problem to be related to something wrong with the Encrypted Local Storage (ELS) that is managed by the Adobe AIR framework. This is a local storage that is used to store data like logon information and settings locally, in an isolated, encrypted storage that is only accessible by the cyn.in desktop application. While we're working on a fix for this problem, there exists the following known workaround to solve the problem.

Workaround

Delete the local ELS store for the application. This can be done as follows:

Windows

1. Kill the running cyn.in desktop application.

This can be done by running task manager and ending the cynindesktop.exe process from the Processes tab.

2. Delete the application ELS storage folder:

Open the ELS folder inside the application data folder of the logged in user. This is typically at :

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\AIR\ELS

If your username is dhiraj, then the folder will be: C:\Documents and Settings\dhiraj\Application Data\Adobe\AIR\ELS

Inside this folder you will find an entry of the form:

com.cynapse.cyn.in.stacker.9F33B28BAFDA22C754F37D63D7A51B121AB82A90.1

Your foldername will not exactly match the above (the generated ID will be different). Delete this folder.

3. Restart cyn.in desktop

 Mac OS/X

1. Kill the running cyn.in desktop application.

This can be done by force quitting the cynin desktop application from the dock bar, or from Activity Monitor (search for cynindesktop in the list).

2. Find and delete the application's ELS folder:

Open terminal

cd /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR/ELS

If your username is dhiraj, then the folder will be: /Users/dhiraj/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR/ELS

Inside this folder you will find an entry of the form:

com.cynapse.cyn.in.stacker.9F33B28BAFDA22C754F37D63D7A51B121AB82A90.1

You can see the exact name by typing ls -al and pressing Enter in the terminal.

Your foldername will not exactly match the above (the generated ID will be different). Delete this folder.

rm -Rf  com.cynapse.cyn.in.stacker.9F33B28BAFDA22C754F37D63D7A51B121AB82A90.1

Easier Alternative

In spotlight type ELS. Go to the folder that appears by double clicking on it. Follow the instructions above and use Finder instead of terminal.

3. Restart the cyn.in desktop application.

Notes

  1. This problem does not occur again after the application's ELS folder is deleted once.
  2. Reproducing this problem consistently requires the usage of snapshotting software like VMWare or Windows Volume management services by restoring the snapshots prior to installation of first time.
