How to request to join a space? If a space has been secured to a group or a number of individuals, am I right in thinking other users cannot see this space at all, so do not know of it's existance, how do they find out about these spaces, how can they request to join spaces. I guess most spaces should be open and readonly to logged in users, so they can see it, but then how do they know who is the owner of the space, and how do they gain access?

You are right, any Space that is not given Can View access to will not be visible to any user. This is by design.

The feature which you are looking for - where particular Spaces may be advertised as "available", and users could see the Space but not the contents, and further "ask" for membership - is currently not available.

any chance of being in a future release, the other things that would be cool, would be to show spaces by most popular and most recent

Hello ollyando,

I think you could enable your requirements with existing Cyn.in as well. Here is what I think:

To let all the logged in users see the spaces, you could give Can View access to them for all the spaces. This way the logged in users will be able to see all spaces and content in those spaces that published to Viewers (can view role). Viewers will be able to comment on all the content but they cannot edit the content or change workflow or see content that is published to contributors (can add role).

To enable users to request for a membership in that space, you can start a discussion thread saying all users who want to become a member of this space and contribute, please add a comment here. Make it available to all users through a link in the Dashboard of the space using a Static Text portlet. The owners of the space can then enable access for those users through the Sharing interface.

Does this solve your requirement? Let me know.

Thanks Romasha, This almost solves my requirement, I think that will work except that all business users who create spaces will have to add the link manually, it's fine as an administrator setting up the structure as you have defined, but end users may have issues doing it. I guess I need an add-on portlet that they can add to a space so people can register as you say.

The other issue that users should not be able to see the content, until their request has been authorized.
I am hoping most spaces in our community will be open to share content, but there are use cases where people want secure spaces say for project collaboration, but allow people to register to join those spaces.

Our organization is interested in using Cyn.in, but having group names being publicly searchable/viewable and having the ability to request access to a group is a requirement. Can anyone tell me if this feature is available now?
